About J-PAL MENA at AUCThe Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab’s Middle East and North Africa regional office is based at The American University in Cairo School of Business. J-PAL (povertyactionlab.org) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 260 affiliated professors at universities around the world, J-PAL draws on results from randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.J-PAL MENA seeks a Senior Design and Communications Associate to lead on developing creative approaches to communicating complex research methods and results in visual formats, including both print and digital. This position will play a key role in advancing J-PAL’s visual storytelling through compelling design, photo illustration, information graphics, and more. The applicant will lead technical graphic design for the office and support communications efforts that contribute to our mission of promoting evidence-informed policy and expanding the reach of our research, policy, and training outputs. The Senior Design and Communications Associate must have a passion for economic development, experience in developing and implementing analytics-driven and audience-sensitive communication strategy, and an exceptional ability to express complex policy and research in written, spoken, and multimedia formats.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign external communication materials that translate complex research into visually compelling print and digital content, including policy briefs, brochures, reports, information graphics and visualizations, event collateral, high-level slide decks, and special projects.Design information graphics and visualizations for video, website, email, and social media to enhance audience understanding of research methods, research results, and policy engagement.Manage Arabic website backend; upload translated content upload to J-PAL Global’s websiteFulfill day-to-day design needsDesign and lead the execution of the annual communications strategy to advance top organizational goals, including the dissemination of research insights through high quality audience-sensitive content, greater use of research results, refinement of the J-PAL MENA brand and expansion of its reach, and tracking progress through intelligent metricsSupport the identification of dissemination-ready stories and the creation and design of innovative content, in the form of thought leadership articles, design and video products, newsletters, social media, digital reports, and multimedia communications products, in collaboration with the research, policy, and training teamsDevelop J-PAL MENA’s media pipeline and journalist relationships to increase news coverage of our research insights and policy influenceWork closely with communications staff to develop J-PAL brand and identity materials and contribute to the organization’s branding and communications strategy.Engage regularly with J-PAL MENA’s policy, training, and research verticals through field visits to research sites, and meetings with staff and leadership, to identify ways the communications team can support the different verticals as well as to inform the pipeline of upcoming public-facing contentCollaborate closely with the J-PAL Global office at MIT to align MENA’s regional communications strategy with broader organizational objectives Proactively identify and execute additional activities to advance the organization’s success and sustainabilityQualificationsDetailed knowledge: Graphic design skills and processes, including typography, layout and composition, production and printing procedures, photography, and file preparation for both print and web;Proficiency: Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop; MS PowerPoint and Word;Familiarity: Drupal or other web Content Management System; DSLR Photography; Flickr; MarketingCloud for Salesforce (or other e-marketing software), Sketch; Outdoor/field photography;Preferred: Background in data visualization; knowledge of flourish.studio, Tableau, D3.js, or other interactive data visualization tools/software; background in Photography; DSLR operation; RAW file processing;Communication: You are detail-oriented and understand how to communicate designdecisions in ways that staff, senior leadership, and affiliated professors understand.
